Types of Apps
Every app we track is one of these five kinds. The kind decides what the app can carry, servers, in particular.
Multiplayer games where anyone can host their own server. These get the full server browser, live player counts, maps, and parties.
BrowseGames that don't support servers, typically singleplayer titles, or multiplayer games where you can't host your own. Everything else still applies: you can upload and create mods, assets, articles and more for them just like any other game.
BrowseEngines and frameworks people build games with, like Godot or Unity. Assets and tooling live here, and engine builds can host servers too.
BrowseVoice and chat platforms such as Discord and TeamSpeak 3. Where people can host their own servers, those get the server browser and live stats as well.
BrowseEverything else, tools, utilities and anything that isn't a game, an engine or a voice platform. No servers.
BrowseTypes of Integrations
How deeply an app can be wired into The Modding Community. An app can support any number of these, and most support none at all.
Assets and mods for this app can be installed, updated and managed straight from the official TMC app. No manual file copying, and everything you have installed stays up to date on its own.
We can see general usage through the app itself, how many people are running it, what they are playing and how those numbers move over time, which feeds the stats and charts across the site.
Custom tracking for servers and parties. When you join a server through a party we can match it to your linked Steam (or other game) account from the client side, so playtime, scores and player counts come from the app itself rather than only from what a server's query API reports.
The app authenticates players against our own (open source, and still to come) authentication system for servers, parties and more. No app supports this yet. We are building the system first, and this is here so you can see where it is going.
Players can be loaded straight into the app from a web browser through a pop-up game player. Where the app has servers, hitting Play on one connects you to that server directly.
Game servers you administer can be managed through the official TMC app: install and update assets and mods on the server itself rather than on your own machine, send RCON commands, watch the live player list, and get alerts when the server goes down, fills up or is wiped. Separate from client-side installing, plenty of platforms support one without the other.
Apps with no integration
Most apps have no integration with us, and that's fine. We still track them, still host their mods, assets, servers and articles, and still try to support them as well as we can. What we can't do without an integration is see anything from inside the app itself, so client-side features like accurate playtime, in-app mod installs and in-browser play aren't available for them.

None of this is live anywhere right now. We're building our own app and our own authentication system first, and these integration types exist so the platform is ready for them. If you work on a game, an engine or a launcher and want to integrate with us, we would genuinely like to hear from you.

Discord servers are listed here like any other game server, with live numbers that come from our bot instead of a query port.
Tracked by our bot
A Discord server has no address we can query, so the listing's owner adds our bot to it. Once the bot is in, it reports the server's population, channels and activity back to us, and the listing stays live and verified for as long as the bot is present. If the bot is removed, the server is delisted but keeps its page, reviews and history.

Total time members have spent in voice and stage channels, summed across everyone, plus how many are connected right now.
Chat messages
How many messages are sent in the server, counted per channel and per minute so activity can be graphed.
Members and online
Total members, how many are online, how many are bots, and boosts, kept current instead of frozen at the day it was listed.
Activity over time
Every figure is stored as history, so you can see a server growing, going quiet or peaking on a weekend.
The bot counts messages but never reads their content, and it only reports channels that @everyone can see.
